چکیده

The effect of algae (nori and spirulina) and fermented plant foods on the hematological status of vitamin B-l2-deficient children was evaluated. Although rising plasma vitamin B-12 concentrations in children consuming only plant foods (0. 1-2.7 g vitamin B-12/d) indicated that the vitamin B12 was absorbed, elevated baseline values of mean corpuscular volume (MCV) further deteriorated. In contrast, MCV improved in children receiving fish containing 0. 15-0.5 zg vitamin B-l2/ d or a vitamin B-12 supplement. Further studies on the specificity ofcurrent vitamin B-l2 assays are warranted. It seems unjustified to advocate algae and other plant foods as a safe source of vitamin B-l2 because its bioavailability is questionable. Am J Clin

Characterization and bioavailability of vitamin B12-compounds from edible algae.

Substantial amounts of vitamin B12 were found in some edible algae (green and purple lavers) and algal health food (chlorella and spirulina tablets) using the Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis ATCC7830 microbiological assay method. Corrinoid-compounds were purified and characterized from these algae to clarify the chemical properties and bioavailability of the algal vitamin B12. True vita...

Bioavailable vitamin D is more tightly linked to mineral metabolism than total vitamin D in incident hemodialysis patients

Prior studies showed conflicting results regarding the association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels and mineral metabolism in end-stage renal disease. In order to determine whether the bioavailable vitamin D (that fraction not bound to vitamin D-binding protein) associates more strongly with measures of mineral metabolism than total levels, we identified 94 patients with previously ...

Association between serum levels of bioavailable vitamin D and negative symptoms in first-episode psychosis

Total vitamin D levels had been commonly reported to be lowered in patients with chronic psychotic illnesses in countries from the higher latitudes. However, studies on patients with first episode psychosis (FEP) are limited. In this study we investigated serum concentrations of total and bioavailable vitamin D levels in FEP patients compared to healthy controls and the association between symp...

Freshwater green algae Chlorella sp. and Scenedesmus obliquus enriched with B group of vitamins can enhance fecundity of Daphnia magna

One of the most important aims of aquatic hatcheries is availability to mass produce of Daphnia magna as a live food with high nutritional value in the shortest time. In the present study, D. magna fed with two freshwater green algae species, Chlorella sp. and Scenedesmus obliquus, enriched with different dosages of a mixture B group vitamins (0, 0.5, 1 and 2 ml.l) were compared at two stages (...

Bioavailable Vitamin D in Obese Children: The Role of Insulin Resistance.

CONTEXT Studies examining vitamin D levels in association with childhood obesity usually do not consider the effect of insulin on vitamin D-binding protein and do not calculate the unbound, bioavailable vitamin D. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate in a group of children 1) the concentrations of both total 25-hydroxyvitamin D and bioavailable fraction, and 2) the potential role of insulin...
